My Week In Pics

If I had to give this past week a theme name, it would be movie week! Mikki and I are huge movie fans and we had made it our habit to go watch a movie almost every week. But during the last few month we haven't been going nearly as much, mostly because none of the movies caught our attention. Well, this week we made up for it :o)
We started by watching "The Hurt Locker" at a friends place. And we liked it a lot. Be warned though, it's about people that disarm bombs in Iraq. So that's what you get. For two hours.
On friday we decided to venture to the beach, to improve our pitiful skintones and get out of town. Well, sunshine and heat 20 miles inland, doesn't necessarily mean sunshine and heat at the coast. At least not around here. So that's what we got - again. Breezy sunshine in Santa Monica. So our beach day became a shopping day! (Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining.) But shopping and eating was done and we still had a little over to hours to kill before heading to a friends gig in town. So we decided to watch "Robin Hood" at one of Santa Monica's old school movie theaters. - And we both liked it a lot. It had a fresh twist to it (as far as that is possible with such an old story), because it was the story about how Robert Longstride becomes Robin Hood. Although I kept expecting Kevin Costner to show up all the time, the cast was great, my absolute favorite being Cate Blanchett as Marian.
To make up for the lack of beach I spent most saturday reading in the sun. I just got the "The Handmade Marketplace" by Kari Chapin. I had read about it over at decor8 blog and decided to order it. It's definitely a nice read. And the fact that it's beautifully done and the fonts are a delight, makes it even more enjoyable: useful eyecandy - ha!
The highlight of the week was the Thirty Seconds to Mars concert at the Greek Theater. What an amazing location, sandwiched between Los Feliz and Griffith Park, this open air theater is surrounded by trees! Gorgeous. I just wish I had done a little more research, so we could have worn warmer clothes :) Bottom line the gig was great. Loved the show and the location.
Today I had a nice lunch with my girls and later we'll be heading out to watch Iron Man 2. Let's see how that goes :)
I don't want to leave you under the impression that all I did this week was drive around an have fun, though. I also got some important stuff done: like taking billions of pictures of my jewelry, naming each piece and writing descriptions for my etsy shop. So next week I should be ready to start uploading more goodies, a few at a time.
Hope you all had a great week too,
xx Naomi

Procrastinating

Design for my next screen print (CMYK process on white fabric)

Oh man! And here I am, procrastinating again.
I don't know what it is - I just can't seem to peel my butt off the chair and get my stuff together.
And it's not like I didn't have enough things to choose from. The things that await me cover a broad variety of categories.
- I could be working on making more of my "best-sellers" for a shop update that I have promised.
- I could be taking pictures for the aforementioned shop update.
- I have been meaning to change my shop banner for a while.
- I should proof my ad for N.E.E.T and send it to them.
- I could be working on designs for future screen prints
- I could be doing laundry.
- I could be mailing a package.
- I could be drawing new jewelry designs...
-I could... oh well...

Instead I'm off to the gym (I'm almost running late with all this procrastinating business), then it's movie night at my friend's place: The Hurt Locker. We've been meaning to watch it for months now....

Inspiration: Antonio Pineda

The other day I was rummaging through all the notes in my phone [a huge list of ideas, inspiration, webs, books, etc] I came across the name Antonio Pineda. Somebody had told me in late 2008 (!!!) that there was an exhibition about his work in Los Angeles. Of course, I forgot to go. Anyways, I decided to google him (don't you love how easy it has become to get information nowadays?) - and ended up ordering the book "Silver Seduction" in less than 10 min.
It arrived on monday! What a book. It has great pictures of his pieces, but also of other jewelers that worked during the same time (mostly 1950s to 1970s) period in Taxco, Mexico, like William Spratling and Margot van Voorhies Carr.
The book has not only made me want to own almost every single piece, but it has also made me itch to design jewelry that involves more fabrication than what I have been doing in the past six month. Let's see how I cope with my lack of equipment, although I have just ordered lots off new tools - yeay!!!
I hope you enjoyed the pictures, it's a small selection of all the beauty depicted in the book.

my Week In Pics

The sun coming through the trees at Lacey Park, San Marino

Where did the last week go? I feel like I was standing next to a freeway and time just went "wooosh" speeding by.
Anyways, enough metaphors. Last week was weird. Not only did it go by extremely fast, but it was a constant rollercoaster (ups, there you go: another metaphor) of emotions. Strange. I'm glad it's over, somehow.
I have a couple things in the making, but not much I could really show in pictures.
Great news was that I am in some press about Unique LA. This pic was in the LA Weekly Facebook page.
Me at my Unique LA booth

And the lovely Sarah included me in her "Unique LA -My favorites" over at her Dedicated Follower of Fashion blog.

I finally started working on new prototype for a jewelry piece that I've had on my mind for a while. Now I "just" need to find the right "tweaks" to make it marketable and comfortable. But it's still very exciting!

This weekend we got our dose of Spain: we watched the modern spanish flamenco dancer Amador Rojas in Santa Monica and got the chance to hang out with a bunch of friendly spanish expats in the spanish bar "Pintxo", which is a good place for a homesickness fix, but not the best spanish food I've tasted.

After 4 hours of sleep I had to pick up our weekly organic CSA Box (so much yummy looking goodness!) and went straight back to bed - ha!
Part of the contents of our weekly box: Oranges, Carrots, Spring Onions, and Asparagus

Saturday night we had dinner with friends, this time german food (I definitely got my share of european food this week!) and watched "The Lovely Bones" - a MUST see. What a wonderful movie. I've never seen such a horrible story told in such a beautiful way.

After a sunny sunday lunch and a stroll through the nicest local park {Lacey Park in San Marino}, I decided to "go for it" and spend most the my NIMO. savings on a bunch of jewelry tools and supplies! Can't wait for my torch and hammers to arrive - I'm such a tool freak!

Huge roses at the Lacey Park. So many colors, textures and sizes. Amazingly beautiful.

Now I'm signing off here to spend some time on the sofa, reading "Falling From Grace" the last book, my "aunt" Ann Eriksson wrote. Right now she's on an eco friendly booktour in Canada, which sounds like so much fun!
Have great week you guys, xx

and even more details.

Hello and welcome to my very belated "week in pics". I have a pretty good excuse for not posting yesterday: pure exhaustion after a two day show. For not posting today: no excuse...
Last week was my very late Spring Break, so Mikki and I decided to head down to San Diego for and overnight escape. We had such a great road trip! Instead of heading down the coast highway (what we usually do) we headed south going inland, through the Rancho Santa Rosa area. And it was awesome. Everything was blooming and green (this is where rainy winters truly pay off). Although we only stayed one night, it was such a great way to disconnect from our daily lives and nevermind that it was gray and rainy at night and on our way back - it was a very relaxing mid-week-weekend :)
I spent the rest of the week getting everything ready for my weekend: Unique LA! Wow, what a great show. So much fun to be part of and such a great place to get to know other vendors and to pass your time people watching (one of my very favorite things to do!)
So all the pics this week are from our trip to San Diego and the show.
Hope you all had a great week and wish you all an even better one, xx

..and the WINNER is...
